Skip It is back for 2019

Lincolnshire Housing Partnership (LHP) will host the following Skip It events in 2019 at pop-up recycling sites between 8.30am to 3pm on these dates:

• Tuesday 21 May, Elliott House car park, Albion Street, Grimsby, DN32 7EW
• Wednesday 22 May, Reed Mere Estate, Hadleigh Road, Immingham, DN40 1HQ.

Skip It started in the summer of 2018 as a new way to help people get rid of their household junk for free. Pop-up recycling points were set up for a day in each of the area’s 15 wards.

People brought everything from mattresses and washing machines to garden clippings and fence panels – most rubbish was recycled or sent to the energy from waste plant to generate electricity.

Skip It also gave people the chance to tidy up their neighbourhoods by clearing rubbish from areas where it was causing a nuisance.

For LHP, the events represent a true example of how working with partners, such as North East Lincolnshire Council, offers real opportunity to help and support both its residents and the wider community.

During the two days, local community groups and officers from a whole host of LHP services will be at the events – offering advice and answering questions.

LHP’s Director of Customers Bridget Lloyd said:

“We cannot thank North East Lincolnshire Council enough for its support in making these two events happen. Skip It is a fantastic idea and demonstrates what can be done for the benefit of everyone.

“We also anticipate that, as people come along to ‘skip’ their unwanted items, they may want to find out about other services within LHP or ask questions, so it is the ideal opportunity for our officers to be there too.”

A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said:

“Last year’s Skip It events were a massive success. We’re really grateful to LHP for teaming up with us to host the first Skip It events of 2019 and to our waste management contractor NEWLINCS for their continued support.

“There was a real buzz about Skip It, with almost 5,000 visitors flocking to the pop-up recycling sites to get rid of 194 tonnes of rubbish – most was recycled or burnt to generate electricity at the Energy from Waste plant.

“As well as giving people an extra way to get rid of household items they no longer need, Skip It saw a coming together of different organisations and community groups who are active in different wards.”

Waste such as furniture, garden clippings, small electrical items, recycling, mattresses and white goods will be collected at the event.

There will be no recycling boxes and no council exhibition trailer.

Some items left at Skip It will be sold at the Grimsby Community Recycling Centre. Proceeds go to charities and good causes.

It’s essential that people taking waste and recycling to the Skip It collection points follow the site instructions and listen to instructions from staff to keep safe.

PLEASE NOTE: No trade waste will be taken or other controlled items (including asbestos, soil and rubble, paints, oils, tyres, fuels, hazardous waste, car batteries, plaster board, green waste, builders vehicles, car parts, gas bottles, liquids).
