Presenteeism is when you go into work when you’re not up to it. Vitality a health insurer did a study and found that more than 40% of employees said their work was being affected by health problems. The figure has risen by a third in the last five years.
The study found that people will put aside their mental and physical health problems to attend work.
One woman who was diagnosed with depression said she was signed off sick but felt pressurised to go back to work. She cleared her inbox every day but it made her more ill at a time she should have been recovering at home. She left her as she felt there was no support in her workplace which she says would have made so much difference.
But another man told us that his workplace got him help and support when he hit rock bottom after losing his wife.
If you break a limb then it is obvious you need time off. But if you suffer from workplace stress or mental illness it is harder to spot. It is thought that there is a lot more to be done to look after employees.
