Man fined for selling illicit cigarettes and tobacco

A man has appeared in court after a vehicle stop and search discovered counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco in the boot of his car.

Ralfs Godainis, 41, of Heneage Road, was stopped by police on Laceby Road, Grimsby, on 7 March 2018.

He pleaded guilty to six offences relating to illicit tobacco, including offences under the Trade Mark Act and related Tobacco Regulations at Grimsby Magistrates’ Court on Friday 15 March 2019.

Councillor David Bolton, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said: “It is apparent that North East Lincolnshire has a problem with large quantities of illegal tobacco being sold throughout the borough.

“There is a push nationally to deal with the illicit trade and North East Lincolnshire Council is keen to support this.

“North East Lincolnshire doesn’t want or need illicit cigarettes or tobacco on our streets. We will pursue people involved in this industry.”

Godainis was convicted for having 1,480 cigarettes and 1.050kg of tobacco.

He was fined £300, ordered to pay costs of £361.33 and a £30 victim surcharge.

An order was made to forfeit and destroy the counterfeit products.
