Most popular 2020 baby names revealed

A list of the top baby names of 2020 has been published.

The list was created by BabyCentre, who noted that the once-popular name Karen is now on the edge of extinction after this year becoming the symbol of a rude, entitled woman across the internet.

There was a change at the top of the girls’ names chart, as Sophia knocked Olivia off the top spot after a four-year reign. But Muhammad still held strong for another year as the most popular name in the boys’ chart.

Girls’ names: There was a reshuffle at the top of the chart this year, with Sophia claiming the top spot, Olivia dropping to second and Amelia climbing from fourth to third place.

Lily, the only name in the top 10 that doesn’t end with an ‘a’, crept two places up the charts to break into the top five at number four. Top 10 new entry, Aria, moved to number eight, shunting Emily down the charts to 13. 2020’s highest climber Arabella soared an impressive 30 places to 57.

Meanwhile, there was more drama at the bottom of the charts as new entries took up all but one of the final nine spots. Margot, Aisha, Anaya, Zainab, Madison, Niamh, Talia and Mabel pushed Ariana, Penny, Martha, Heidi, Myla, Kiara, Leah and Lara out of the top 100.

There were even more surprises as last year’s hot favourites Darcie and Eliza were among the fastest fallers, with Darcie plummeting a jaw-dropping 40 places, and Eliza dropping 25 places. Will they still be in the top 100 next year?

Boys’ names: For the fourth year running, Muhammad remained in pole position. Noah clung to the runner-up spot while Oliver moved up one position to number three, pushing Leo down into fifth place.

Ayaan was the highest top 100 new entry at number 57, joined by eight more debutants, including Ronnie, Rowan and Austin. Theo was the only new entry in the top 10 at number eight, ousting Harry. Archie moved into the top 20 along with other new entries Finley and Isaac.

Highest climber Roman soared 33 places to number 48, followed by Michael racing 28 places up the charts to number 54 and Aaron jumping 18 places to 74.

Meanwhile Jaxon, a meteoric climber in 2019, was this year’s fastest faller, plunging 23 places to number 39. Levi, Leon, Harley and Evan are among those to be knocked out of the charts.

The experts at BabyCentre used the data from thousands of parents registering their choices on the website and studied the registrations for new trends.
