Meghan Markle reveals she had a miscarriage
Meghan Markle has written a personal account of suffering a miscarriage in an opinion piece for the New York Times.
In the article titled The Losses We Share, The Duchess of Sussex, 39, revealed that she had lost her unborn, second child in July.
She described the experience as “an almost unbearable grief experienced by many but talked about by few”.
The Duchess wrote: “It was a July morning that began as ordinarily as any other day: Make breakfast. Feed the dogs. Take vitamins. Find that missing sock.
“Pick up the rogue crayon that rolled under the table. Throw my hair in a ponytail before getting my son from his crib.
“After changing his diaper, I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right.
“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.”
The Duchess said that hours later she lay in a hospital bed, holding her husband’s hand.
“I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears. Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal,” she wrote.
Meghan said she was speaking out about her loss because miscarriage was still a taboo subject which led to a “cycle of solitary mourning”.
The former actress said she wanted to encourage people to ask “are you OK” this holiday season.
Meghan and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, had their first child, Archie, on 6 May 2019.
The couple quit the Royal Family in January this year, with the couple then moving to the US a few months later.
