By Locals say Lia Nici ‘doesn’t speak for me’ amid calls to resign
People across Grimsby are calling for MP Lia Nici to stand down after she announced plans to support Boris Johnson in the Conservative leadership campaign.
Speaking to Sky News yesterday Nici said: “I think Boris Johnson is the leader that the country wants and voted for, especially in my constituency. They believe that he wants to make positive change and I support that, and I think he’s the leader that can move the country forward in the direction we want.”
In a statement given to the BBC’s Local Democracy Reporting Service she added: “I’m backing Boris Johnson because he is the person who has the real mandate from the electorate to be prime minister.
“He also has the backing of the majority of people in the constituency of Great Grimsby, who didn’t ever want to see him go. They want to see him back.”
Nici’s claims prompted a flurry of frustration, with many people stating she ‘doesn’t speak for’ them. Others called the ‘invisible’, questioning whether she can adequately represent the people of Grimsby when her presence within the community is ‘non-existent’.
Now, in an interview with BBC Radio Humberside, Nici has gone as far as to claim that Johnson “didn’t go to parties” reaffirming that he was a “good leader for the country and internationally” and we “people want him back”.
She denied that he had ever lied or broken the law either in his former role as a journalist or as the prime minister.
Debbie Sylvester tweeted: “Johnson can do whatever he wants and Nici will stay love him. What about your constituents, who deserve so much better? The country can’t afford to go from one crisis to another. She’s been invisible whilst everyone has been worried due to the #costoflivingcrisis but has taken to the media to back the law breaker, party, holidaying, money wasting Johnson. Do people who live in Grimsby want him back?”
Another wrote: “She doesn’t speak for the people of Grimsby. She is only out for herself. When was the last time anyone spoke to or saw her? She does nothing for our community or its people. Get her and the lot of them out!”
