Grimsby’s Health Visitors praised for ‘tremendous’ work

A group of Health Visitors and nurses working for North East Lincolnshire Council have been praised according to the standards of UNICEF’s UK Baby Friendly Initiative.

The Health Visiting Service provides support for new parents during and after pregnancy, up until their child turns 5.

The UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative, formed in 1994, is a code of standards that encourages services to ‘support families with feeding and developing close and loving relationships’.

For a ‘very high standard of care’, services operating in North East Lincolnshire received Stage 3 accreditation following an assessment by UNICEF.

UNICEF published a report noting that “It was clear to the assessment team that new mothers receive a very high standard of care.”

“Mothers felt happy with their care and appreciated their Health Visitor. Some had extra visits to support them with problems with bottle feeding.”

North East Lincolnshire Council’s deputy leader and portfolio holder for health, wellbeing, and adult social care, Councillor Stan Shreeve, praised the ‘tremendous’ workers at the service, highlighting the ‘wonderful’ staff that make up the service.

Cllr Shreeve said: “The wonderful nurses and midwives who make up our Health Visiting service really are tremendous people who work all year round to give new parents the very best level of support, and this accreditation reflects that.

“Becoming a parent, whether for the first time or not, can be a nerve-wracking experience, and babies can often develop problems through no fault of the parents, so it’s important that there is the free support available whenever it’s needed.”
