Eleven Conservatives now bidding to be next prime minister

Eleven Tory MPs and Ministers have now declared that they will be entering the running to become the next prime minister.

Yesterday evening Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced that she would be running, stating her plans in the Daily Telegraph.

She pledged to start cutting taxes “from day one”.

Many of the candidates have set out tax plans as part of their campaigns as the 1922 committee are set to meet today to decide on rules for this leadership race.

The two-stage process will see Conservative MPs whittle down the candidates to two, through voting rounds, before party members decide the winner.

The candidates for Tory leader, and prime minister, who have declared so far are:

  • former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch
  • Attorney General Suella Braverman
  • newly-appointed Foreign Office minister Rehman Chishti
  • former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt
  • former Health Secretary Sajid Javid
  • Trade minister Penny Mordaunt
  • Transport Secretary Grant Shapps
  • former Chancellor Rishi Sunak
  • Foreign Secretary Liz Truss
  • backbencher Tom Tugendhat
  • Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi

The party aims to have the final two candiates decided on in the coming days, with the hopes of a winner being decided over the summer ready for parlieaments return in September.

Former chancellor Rishi Sunak currently has the highest number of backers, with trade minister Penny Mordaunt also proving popular.
