Greater Lincolnshire councils plan to bring gigabit broadband to rural areas

Greater Lincolnshire councils have unveiled a plan to supply gigabit broadband to rural areas.

Councils for the greater Lincolnshire area will bid for a share of a staggering £110m government fund which would provide incredibly fast gigabit internet for rural communities.

According to the Lincolnite, Lincolnshire County, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire Councils will be asked to approve the government’s “Project Gigahub” initiative next Friday (1 July).

The project, run by the Building Digital UK department, will enable authorities to offer publicly-owned buildings to act as “hubs” for the superfast broadband.

The government would pay for all work to be done which would then provide locals with quicker and more reliable internet speeds.

“It is hoped that because the cost of the provision of the fibre spine into an area has been met by public funding, then commercial operators would be encouraged to branch off the spine and deploy to adjacent communities along its route,” said the report.

“To date, there is a good degree of interest from these operators.”

The scheme falls under the governments £5bn national initiative to provide superfast broadband for everyone.

“Lincolnshire County Council will lead the bidding process on behalf of the three authorities”, the Lincolnite reported.

It is hoped that up to 7,000 rural locations across the country will be able to benefit from the broadband project.
