First case of monkeypox detected in North Lincolnshire

There has been a confirmed case of monkeypox in North Lincolnshire.

The Statutory Notification of Infectious Diseases in England and Wales by the UK Health Security Agency provided information that the case in North Lincolnshire is one of the 17 recorded cases in the country.

The virus originates from the west and central Africa, the symptoms include a high temperature, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen glands, shivering, and exhaustion.

It is usually said between one to five days after symptoms start, a rash appears usually on the face, sometimes spreading to other parts.

The NHS has advised anyone suffering to isolate themself.

The NHS is offering vaccinations to people who are exposed to the virus, this will include various healthcare workers.

Dr. Susan Hopkins, the UKHSA chief medical adviser, said: “We are continuing to promptly identify further monkeypox cases in England throughout extensive surveillance and contact tracing networks, our vigilant NHS services, and thanks to people coming forward with symptoms. We are asking people to look out for new spots, ulcers, or blisters, on any part of their body.

“If anyone suspects they might have these, particularly if they have recently had a new sexual partner, they should limit their contact with others and contact NHS 111 or their local sexual health service as soon as possible, though please phone ahead before attending in person.”

It is currently unknown where the precise location of the monkeypox case is.
