Passengers advised to ‘limit the disruption’ by flying with one bag

Airline passengers are to take only one carry-on bag on holiday and not check in luggage to avoid delays, from industry figures.

The GMB union has said not checking in luggage would “limit the disruption” for aviation workers.

There have been hundreds of flights cancelled this week due to staff shortages, with TUI announcing further cancellations in the coming weeks.

Andy Prendergast, national secretary of the GMB told The Daily Telegraph “It is one less thing to worry about. If people can check-in online and do not take bags, that limits the disruption.

“It’s not a magic bullet but it does reduce the chance of there being problems.”

Paul Charles, chief executive of travel consultancy PC Agency, said “The smaller the bag, the less time you spend in security queues. That would reduce the queues during the busiest weekend of the year so far.”

It would be easy to imagine those planning on longer trips may not receive such suggestions positively.

There have been at least 377 flights out of the UK that has been cancelled since 25th May, TUI cancelled six flights a day throughout June.

Following Transport Secretary Grant Shapps’s meeting with the travel industry on Wednesday evening, he said he understood the sector’s staffing problems adding that “does not excuse poor planning and overbooking flights that they cannot service.”

In an echo of a previous controversial company decision, airline bosses asked Mr. Shapps to consider industry recruiting from overseas.

Mr. Shapps rejected the idea.
