Ex-cabinet minister cites Boris Johnson’s ‘unacceptable failings of leadership’
There have been more challenges of leadership for the PM as another ex-cabinet minister has condemned Johnson’s leadership.
This follows Sue Gray’s long-awaited report into Partygate that was published last week.
Former cabinet minister Dame Andrea Leadsom has blamed the PM for “unacceptable failings of leadership”.
A former Conservative business secretary is now the 40th MP to have questioned the PM’s leadership, following being fined by the Met for breaking lockdown rules.
Dame Andrea sent a letter to her South Northamptonshire constituents on Monday.
“It is painfully clear to me that given the extent and severity of rule-breaking taking place over 20 months, it is extremely unlikely that senior leaders were unaware of what was going on”.
Dame Andrea supported Boris Johnson in his leadership campaign but now says “I, therefore, agree with Sue Gray’s conclusions that there have been significant failures of leadership, both political and official, in No10 and the Cabinet Office.
“The conclusion I have drawn from the Sue Gray report is that there have been unacceptable failings of leadership that cannot be tolerated and are the responsibility of the prime minister.
She says herself and all Conservative MPs “must now decide on what is the right course of action that will restore confidence in our government.”
A total of 54 letters must be submitted to trigger a leadership vote, to be handed to Sir Graham Brady.
There were three more letters revealed on Monday which brings a total of 27 Tory MPs publicly calling for a resignation.
