Amazing mum sets out to hold prom for local students after school cancels their own
An amazing mum is fundraising and organising a prom for local students after a school cancelled their own event.
Sammi told Gi Media that she was speaking to her son and his girlfriend who are both in year 11 at The Academy Grimsby about their GCSEs, how different it is with Covid-19, and how Sammi sadly didn’t get to go to her prom.
The two students then shared how their prom would no longer be going ahead, leaving so many students devastated.
It was then that she decided these students deserved to have a prom after the stress of juggling GCSEs during a global pandemic.
Sammi said: “The closer it to got to prom, the more they saw different kids posting pics of trying on dresses, etc. I knew I couldn’t do it all on my own and needed help, that’s when I thought instead of writing my report for uni I would see if the people of Grimsby and surrounding areas would be kind enough to help out.
“I was overwhelmed by the response from parents, students, ex-students, and people who have no connection to TAG. Unfortunately, I have not heard anything from the school.”
Gi Media has contacted The Academy Grimsby for a comment on the situation.
She added: “The fundraising is going well and we have formed a kind of committee, with dresses to loan to students less fortunate we don’t have any suits thought. Any monies left over from the just giving page will go into a kitty for future years, we are halfway to our target already.
“We still need a disco, karaoke and or band, a printer for 2 large posters and of course as many donations as possible. These children have been so resilient and amazing through all the lockdowns, many wearing face masks from 8 am till gone 6 pm.
“They were only allowed to remove them to eat lunch or when outside. I felt this was something that I could try and do to give them a good memory to leave TAG with. With the love, kindness, and support from the people of Grimsby and the surrounding area, not only has this prom been made possible but also future proms.”
Cue World in Grimsby has kindly offered to host the prom on June 24, so students can have the night of fun they deserve and a proper send-off for the school days.
Anyone who would like to donate to the prom fundraiser can do so through the Just Giving Page found here.
