Unfinished Scunthorpe cycle route used as ‘dumping ground’

An unfinished cycle route in Scunthorpe is being used by fly-tippers as a “dumping ground”

Fly-tippers have taken advantage of the unfinished route and targeted part of the lane between Ferriby Road and Spilsby Road.

Yesterday (27 April), pictures began to emerge of the illegally dumped waste left in the middle of the lane, angering local residents.

In a social media post, an image capturing two significant piles of litter, stated:

“This new cycle route in Scunthorpe has yet to be complete and officially opened”

“However, this stretch between Ferriby Road and Spilsby Road has already become a dumping ground”

Scunthorpe residents were quick to issue heated responses, with multiple comments flooding in that shared the same sentiment.

“That’s awful”, one local said.

“Absolutely unbelievable”, another added.

One local suggested that the route was a “total waste of money” and argued the money should have been invested in local parks whilst focusing on ways to improve spaces for children.

Following the discovery, North Lincolnshire Council issued a statement, saying:

“This fly-tip was reported to us by one of our highway operatives and has been cleaned up today (Wed 27 April)”

“North Lincolnshire Council spends more than £1m a year cleaning up other people’s rubbish, and that includes around 40 fly-tipping reports every month”, they added.

“Our enforcement offices will issue £400 fixed penalty notices to anyone we discover has breached their Household Waste Duty of Care and allowed their waste not to be disposed of properly”

The council has urged anyone who has witnessed fly-tippers illegally disposing of their waste to take photographic evidence and report it to them directly.
