Spate of ‘garden-hopping’ and attempted break-ins across Scartho and Waltham

Scartho and Waltham residents have reported yet another spate of garden-hopping and attempted break-ins across the area on Tuesday night.

Similar reports of shed and garage locks being broken and loud noises in residents’ gardens were heard earlier this month and in March.

One report stated that at roughly 2:30 am Wednesday morning two men were spotted attempting to break into a resident’s garage before fleeing the scene.

Police arrived 20 minutes later after calls from neighbours to inspect the damage.

Other residents had similar experiences, including nearby in Waltham.

A resident on Brian Avenue shared how on either Monday evening or Tuesday day time their garage lock had been tampered with so that it no longer locks in place.

They wrote: “I put a padlock on my shed after being certain that I heard someone milling around early hours of the morning – I left the combination reading a certain number (not the one to unlock it) so I’d know if it’d been tampered with.

“Forgot to check this morning, but checked tonight and the numbers completely changed and the lock no longer stays shut or works so someone’s definitely been at it. Could have happened anytime last night or even during the day today as thieves do watch for when your out at work. Just a warning for anybody else down the street and in the area.”

Some have suggested setting up a nieghbourhood watch scheme to prevent further instances from happening and to keep all residents safe.

Humberside Police shared a local update on Twitter saying: “Several reports of shed and garage burglaries on the Freshney Ward overnight on 24/04/2022-25/04/2022.

“Please be vigilant and keep all outbuildings secure and cycles locked even when kept in a shed or garage.”

The force also shared tips on how to keep your homes and garden safe.

The main effected area appears to be the Kesnignton Green area of Scartho, with many other residents reporting loud noises and banging coming from their gradens overnight.

Sharing their experiences, residents wrote: “I live in scartho and our house backs onto rose & crown field, our fence has been damaged and side gate unlocked,”

“I’m in Scartho, also back onto fields, and my side gate and shed/playhouse doors all open this morning, someone has definitely been mooching around my garden also!”
