Locals furious as Stagecoach increases bus fares
Grimsby locals have been left furious after Stagecoach announced that they would be making changes to bus fares as of next week.
A spokesperson for Stagecoach said: “Singles will be as little as £1 across the region with customers paying no more than £4.50 for a journey. Now with only four different price bands for singles and returns, customers will get a much more consistent experience across services in the region.
“Amongst other improvements for customers will be new flexible ticket options including Flexi 5 and Flexi 10 bundles of DayRider tickets for those who now lead a more flexible lifestyle, giving customers 12 months to use them and saving up to 30% when compared to buying individually.”
While group tickets may be slashed in price, a single ticket will now cost £2.20, up from the current £1.80.
According to Stagecoach, the cost of running buses has risen ‘significantly’ despite government funding to keep services running through the pandemic.
Fares will now be determined by price bands across the region, with the prices gradually increasing across each area of Grimsby.
One local wrote: “Make the bus service free for everyone. It’ll encourage more people to leave the car at home & cut congestion making the roads safer for everyone.”
Another was shocked by the rate of the increase: “They usually go up to 10p for a single fare but this time it’s 40p that’s more than a 20% increase.”
“Family ticket £12?? I live in West Mids where the same ticket is £7 and £4 after 6 pm.”
Many have also complained about the current cancellations and delays, with many buses being cancelled each day across the town leaving some waiting over 30 minutes for a bus.
“Need to sort the bus services out taking buses out at the last minute when you’ve waited 20 minutes it becoming a regular thing on Saturdays.”
“Don’t mind paying but it’s not like it’s a regular on time service they come as and when they want.”
