Government scraps attempt to delay probe

The Government has scrapped plans to delay a vote into whether Boris Johnson misled MPs about lockdown parties.

The Government has reportedly dropped their amendment of the vote, offering Conservatives a free vote on Labour’s motion to refer the PM to the Committee on Privileges.

Last night the Government proposed the amendment which would have seen a delay in the PM being referred to the committee.

They have since abandoned the amendment this morning, which would have seen the PM referred after the Met concludes its investigation, including Civil Servant Sue Gray’s report.

MPs will now reportedly vote on Labour’s motion and if passed, the committee will be able to investigate Mr. Johnson.

From the BBC, a source states ” We tabled an amendment last night because we wanted to be explicit about ensuring Sue Gray can complete and publish her report without any further delay, as well as allow the Metropolitan Police to conclude their investigations.

“We now recognise that-in practice- this is almost certainly likely to be the case and therefore we are happy for the Labour motion to go through if that is the will of the House”.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer says he “seeks to defend the simple principle, that telling the truth in political matters”.
