Storm Eunice sparks flood warning for Humber Estuary

Storm Eunice sparks flood warning for Humber Estuary

A flood waning has now been issued for the Humber Estuary at East and West Hessle foreshores due to the ongoing Storm Eunice.

The Environment Agency issued the warning this afternoon due to extremely strong winds.

The storm is expected to cause waves and spray overtopping on the estuary this evening, the Environment Agency said.

A flood warning means “flooding is expected, act now.”

The agency warned people should: “Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as the expected large waves and sea spray will be dangerous.”

They added: “Areas most at risk include North bank of Humber estuary to the east of Humber Bridge, particularly around Hessle foreshore. Overtopping waves and spray are expected from 07:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Unsettled conditions are expected to continue so alerts and warnings may be required over the weekend.”

Meanwhile five flood alerts have also been issued for other parts of Yorkshire.

A flood alert means “flooding is possible, be prepared”.

These include:

  • Humber Estuary from Hessle Haven to Faxfleet
  • Ings Beck and Oakenshaw Beck in the Wakefield area
  • Lower River Calder catchment
  • River Seven catchment in Norh Yorkshire
  • Upper River Ouse in York

The EA says it’s “closely monitoring the situation”.

Earlier on today the Humber Bridge stated that it would close to all traffic from 1:30 pm onwards due to the weather and many other transport links have cancelled services.

Parts of Lincolnshire are experiencing road blockages due to fallen trees and debris.

Coastguards have also warned members of the public to stay away from the beach and coastal areas.
