GTFC vs Southend United match postponed due to Storm Eunice
Today’s Grimsby Town match against Southend United will no longer be going ahead due to “significant deterioration and damage” caused to the Roots Hall Stadium.
Earlier this afternoon the club stated that the game would be going ahead but regular checks would take place to check for concerns.
The club stated that they “pushed all day” for an early decision as fans would have to travel for the match in turbulent and dangerous weather.
In a statement GTFC said: “Following significant deterioration and damage caused to the Roots Hall Stadium between 2pm and 4pm, the National League have agreed to postpone this evening’s fixture at Southend United.
“As stated earlier this morning, we have continued to push all day for an early decision on behalf of our travelling supporters.
“Tickets held for the original fixture this evening will be valid for the rearranged date, with those unable to attend the new date eligible for a refund by returning tickets to Blundell Park. Any information relating to the rearranged fixture will be published in due course.”
They said they shared their supporters’ frustrations and wished those who made the perilous journey to Southend a “very safe journey home in difficult travel conditions.”
On the way to the match before it’s cancellation some fans had reportedly gotten stuck on transport links as trains to London were halted or cancelled.
A number of train providers have arranged alternative travel for commuters, while others have been cancelled entirely leaving many people stranded.
Southend is currently subject to a red weather alert with a ‘danger to life’ warning, according to the Met Office.
