Residents anger prompts change to traffic system

Local residents in Waltham have been left outraged recently as temporary traffic lights have left some motorists queuing for up to half an hour.

The lights were installed on Cheapside by Anglain Water as workers are carrying out maintenance on the water network.

After residents complained to the company about the disruption Anglain Water agreed to change the four way system to three.

The operating hours will also be changed from 24 hours, now taking place between 8 am and 5 pm.

According to a local resident the works should be completed by Friday 18 February.

Sharing their anger to Facebook, many residents shared their experiences of the traffic lights.

One person wrote: “I travel to Melton Mowbray every day for work this is all I need.”

Another shared: “Took me an hour last night from getting through the lights on Bradley Road to Fairway – utter chaos.”

“Stuck in it Sunday on way to Wold Newton, same distance for me via A16 from Humberston, if going Binbrook way a good alternative.”

“I live right on the high street, I’m dreading trying to get out and then parked again!”

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “Our engineers have been undertaking some maintenance work on our water network in Cheapside, Waltham, which will help to prevent leaks and burst pipes in the future.

“We have installed temporary traffic lights to help keep our team and other road users safe while they work. We expect this work to be complete by the beginning of next week, and the lights will be removed on Friday to allow for normal use of the road over the weekend.”

“We are replacing the four-way traffic lights for a three-way light set up instead to ease pressure on traffic. We are also going to be bringing the lights in at the end of the teams’ shifts and putting them back up at the start of shifts, so they will not be up whilst no one is on site working.”
