Doncaster volunteer paints wall art for activity centre

A self-taught, Mexborough tattoo artist has created relaxing wall art at an activity centre for people with learning disabilities in Doncaster.

John Anderson, 45, painted a series of mandalas at the Diamond Activity Centre on Tickhill Road, run by the Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH).

The design includes images such as bubbles, eyes and a peacock which were all completed using bold colours.

John became an RDaSH volunteer after the trust helped him with his mental health issues.

Speaking to RDaSH, John said: “I wanted to give something back and this seemed a good way.

“I started before the first Covid lockdown in 2020 then had to leave it for over a year until it was safe to return and pick-up where I left off.

“I paint in two hour long bursts a couple of times a week.”

Diamond Centre Senior Charge Nurse Morag McKay-Ellison added: “The images initially draw your eyes in and your mind then explores them.

“It’s a fantastic, calming design that is perfect for the people we look after.

“We’re really grateful to John for giving up his time to create such a unique piece of permanent artwork for us.”
