Albion pub for sale following redevelopment approval
The Albion pub in Grimsby has been put up for sale following news of planning applications for the site being given the green light by North East Lincolnshire Council’s Planning Committee.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the pub, based on Cleethorpe Road in Grimsby, is to be demolished to make way for a new store and self-contained flats after being closed for more than a decade.
The application was submitted by Mr Surrinder Mehat, owner of Bradford-based Metro C21 Stores Limited.
The new shop will be on the ground floor of a new three-storey building, with four self-contained flats above.
However, some local residents have shared their dismay for the proposed shop and flats.
Despite these objections and concerns, The Albion pub is now for sale as plans advance to the next stage.
The listing for the building appeared on Connect UK Auctions on Thursday 16 December with the guide price at £125,000.
The bidding is set to commence at 11:00am – ending at 1:00pm – on Wednesday 19 January 2022.
The description on the auction website reads: “A former public house on a corner plot. The site offers future potential subject to all consents. Unmodernised. Freehold.”
Due to its dilapidated condition, potential buyers will not have the opportunity to examine the interior of the property before purchasing it.
In the planning report, The Albion pub is listed as being “seriously fire-damaged and subject to extensive criminal damage”.
Whilst some residents are saddened by the ‘beautiful building’ going to waste, the report indicates that, “whilst the loss of the historic asset is somewhat regrettable, the case has been made for the redevelopment with a good quality building”.
The works will hopefully attract buyers quicker and “bring investment and vitality to an area which is in need of regeneration”.
One resident recommended an outcome that may please both side, writing: “I would not object to its demolition if the tiled frontages were preserved and incorporated in to any new build.
“This has been successfully carried out on numerous buildings in Hull and there is no reason why it cannot be done in Grimsby.”
However, this does not appear to be the route developers are taking at this time.
