Dog owner reported after leaving pet in hot car

A Doncaster resident has been reported to RSPCA after leaving their dog in a hot car at a local retail park yesterday.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police attended the incident at Lakeside following calls from a concerned member of the public.

According to reports, a small dog had been left in the back of the Land Rover.

Although the window was left slightly open, officers said it wasn’t enough “to provide proper ventilation”.

Fortunately, the gap was big enough for officers to reach in and open the door of the vehicle.

A spokesperson for the Doncaster Central Neighbourhood Policing Team said:

“On hot days like today, please leave your dogs at home and don’t take them shopping and then leave them in the car.
“The owner of the car had left the window down slightly, enough for us to reach in and unlock the door, but not enough to provide proper ventilation for his pet.
“Luckily for him he’s avoided a broken window…”

The dog was checked over and appeared to be ok, according to South Yorkshire Police.

The driver and pet owner has been reported to the RSPCA who “will follow up the incident”.
