Rise in people sleeping rough in Grimsby

According to the homeless service at North East Lincolnshire council, more homeless people on the streets this year as the cost of living crisis continues to hit households.

It comes as there’s a yellow weather warning for ice across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.

Support staff found eight rough sleepers in Grimsby in just one day this week as some homeless people are struggling to get shelter for the night.

Sophie Madson, who works for the homeless prevention service at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “There is certainly a rise of people that are not only homeless but are being threatened with homelessness due to landlords selling up and the cost of living crisis. There is a lot of people coming through the service at the moment.

“People sleeping rough will register for the one night then it might not be available the next night. They can approach our team then we can hopefully get them in YMCA or some form of supported accommodation that’s suitable for them.

“I am working with the police to let homeless people know there is a service they can access like harbour place to get a bed for the night.”

Local organisation Harbour Place provide night shelter for rough sleepers alongside support and care to help those on the streets find jobs and permanent housing.

Since the cost of living crisis the charity has seen a rise in the number of rough sleepers coming to them for help, especially due to the cost of living crisis and increasingly cold weather.
