Council denies permission for war memorial

Despite local support a heritage group have been denied permission to convert an air raid shelter into a memorial to Polish wartime airmen.

During the Second World War the site was used as the base for the No. 300 (Polish) Squadron. Later it was used by the No. 305 (Polish) Squadron and then as a resettlement camp for Polish veterans.

If approved, the plans would have seen the shelter, which is the only surviving part of the sick quarters at RAF Faldingworth, become part of an open air memorial to Polish airman who served during the Second World War.

It would have been integrated into an existing heritage trail and viewable by appointment.

But West Lindsey District Council has refused permission due to the ‘isolated location’ and concerns over the viability of the plans.
