Police update after ‘distressing’ dog incidents

There has been a concern in the Brereton Avenue area of Cleethorpes as of late, as two dog attacks have left residents uneasy.

According to reports, on Tuesday 8th November, a man was attacked and injured by a large ‘mastiff’ type dog, on Sussex Rec.

Another incident, involved two dogs in close proximity, on November 14, according to reports, a small dog was set upon by two larger dogs, which was reported to be very aggressive and traumatic.

Marie Roddy spoke further about the incident at Sussex Rec, where her husband, Andy was injured by the ‘mastiff’ whilst with their infant.

‘He was just taking him to the park at Sussex Rec and this dog came bounding up growling and knocked him completely over. He had to hold Samuel out of the way while the dog was going for him and put him high up on the steps of the slide.

‘A young lad who was jogging came to his aid after hearing him shout for help. The dog bit Andy on the leg and both the lad and Andy had to kick it away. The owners need to be responsible for this.’ She said.

Inspector Steven Peck said: “Understandably, these are both distressing incidents, for both the man injured and for the owner of the dog who sadly didn’t survive the attack.

“Investigations are underway however it is not confirmed at this stage if these two incidents involved the same dogs as this will form part of our enquiries.

“If you own a dog, you are responsible for how it behaves at home and in public. You should always take steps to make sure that interactions with other dogs and people, particularly children, are safe.

“It is an offence to allow a dog to attack or cause serious injury to a person or livestock, or to behave in such a way that makes a person worried that it might attack them. Should a dog attack or be aggressive to a person this would be an offence under the legislation and we’d encourage reports to the police.

Regarding the incidents, Humberside Police said:

“Two reports were received earlier this month regarding incidents involving dogs in Cleethorpes.

“On Tuesday 8 November, at around 10.45am, it was reported that a man sustained an injury to his leg following an incident where a dog bit him in a recreational park on Brereton Avenue.

“We also received a report that a dog was fatally attacked by two dogs on Brereton Avenue on Monday 14 November, at around 10.30am. In this incident, a description of the dogs has been obtained, with both described as large, one brown and white and the other brown.

“Anyone who witnessed either incident should please call us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 22000096055.”

Councillor Marie Green, who has issued advice before on recent attacks, said she is ‘fed up of hearing about irresponsible owners who do not keep their dogs under control.’

‘It does come back to a need for police action but there are not enough’ she said.

The Councillor stressed her concern, as schools are in close proximity and not to mention footfall traffic.

‘I am thinking of trying to get some kind of meeting between residents police and council officers.

‘People are rightfully fearful and concerned for their dogs themselves and their families.’ she said.
