Councillor says £2m CCTV ‘dealing’ with illegal parking

The new CCTV cameras outside Signhills School in Cleethorpes have shown results in tackling illegal parking.

North East Lincolnshire Council announced earlier this year that they would be installing CCTV cameras and Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) to stop illegal parking or stopping.

Portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, Councillor Ron Shepherd, said the reactions from parents and teachers has been ‘fantastic’, adding that it gives them ‘reassurance that we are dealing with the issue’.

Speaking to BBC Sounds today with Kofi Smiles, Cllr Shepherd said ‘there has been an increase of the number of fines’, and the Cllr hopesit will ‘decrease as those realise.’

NELC previously said after the installation, in just 7 days a total of six drivers were caught out for parking illegally or stopping in the ‘keep clear’ markings to drop off children. The drivers were each caught out contravening the TRO on sections of Hardy’s Road, close to Signhills School.

During the first two-weeks of the CCTV being installed, any drivers caught out during the first 14 days received a warning notice rather than a fine.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities at North East Lincolnshire Council, said that he was pleased with the initial results.

“We put these cameras in ultimately to keep children safe. It has been clear for a long time that schools are regularly pleading for parents and carers to be responsible when dropping off and picking up their children.

In an interview with BBC Sounds, Councillor Shepherd said:

‘One of the issues we highlighted is parking outside of schools, across the borough.

‘£2 million CCTV scheme across the borough, mounted CCTV outside schools where areas are covered by traffic regulation orders

‘The first reaction from parents and school teachers is fantastic, it gives them the reassurance that we are dealing with the issue of dangerous parking

‘There has been an increase of the number of fines, we hope it will decrease as those realise.’
