Upset as popular park benches removed

The removal of benches from the popular Haverstoe Park, Cleethorpes has left some locals confused and longing for their return.

It was initially thought that their removal could be related to antisocial behaviour which has been ongoing at the location. CCTV has since been installed in the park as part of a new £2.2million surveillance network operated by North East Lincolnshire Council.

Despite this locals say they have discovered heavy damage and vandalism to the park benches, trees and fences on a number of occasions.

One frustrated local said: “Hopefully they are being replaced. My nanna walks around the park daily, I know she uses the benches sometimes if her legs are hurting. She loves that bit at the back but without somewhere to stop she may struggle now.” One user said on social media responding to the removal of the benches.

Director of the Pavillion cafe, Louise Deane, said she had heard that the benches were being moved elsewhere in the park, but could not confirm this.

“I often sat on the benches in summer when heavily pregnant. Handy to have somewhere to sit at the back,” added another resident.

A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council said:

“The benches in question were removed at the request of ward members due to antisocial behaviour in the park.

“We will look at relocating them when a suitable location is identified.”
