When and where will this years Christmas tree go?
North East Lincolnshire Council have shared when and where this year’s Christmas tree will be erected as the festive season draws ever closer.
Last year the Christmas tree in St James Square received some criticism from locals for being too small, with one writing: “A lot better but could have been bigger.”
Some, however, preferred the tree over previous years as they felt it fit the space better and looked more festive.
However, the tree that received the most amount of criticism was the one placed in Riverhead Square near the bus stops.
Costing the council £1,000, locals were furious with the ‘underwhelmingly’ small tree as they felt that the artificial piece did not represent the Christmas spirit or uplift the town centre.
This year, festive celebrations will begin on Friday 25 November in St James Square with the Christmas Market also making a comeback.
The night will host live music and food stalls as the council hope to attract more footfall to the town centre ahead of the festive shopping period.
A Christmas lights switch-on will also be held on 25 November so locals can see the town centre glow with festive spirit.
This year’s tree will also be sourced from a local supplier and erected in St James Square during the week that the Christmas celebrations begin.
The council said: “The aim of the festive activity is to attract footfall to the retail areas in the town centres ahead of the Christmas shopping period, to support businesses, and provide a welcoming environment for people to enjoy the run up to the festive period.”
Cllr Tom Furneaux, Cabinet member for tourism, said: “Christmas is a time for people to come together. As a Council, we’re putting up the Christmas tree, sourced from a local supplier, and organising some local food and drink and free entertainment in the town centre to kickstart the season, something that I hope people will enjoy.”
