Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’ slated by critics after debut
DC’s latest film adaptation Black Adam is about to hit cinemas worldwide but critics are less than impressed by this action-packed fantasy.
The premise is described as follows: “Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods–and imprisoned just as quickly–Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.”
Dwayne Johnson makes his superhero debut after hits such as Jungle Zoo and Jumanji, joined by Pierce Brosnan and teen heartthrob Noah Centineo.
Although the general public have yet to have their say, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have been highly critical of Jaume Collet-Serra’s newest film.
On the rotten meter the film currently sits at a lower score of 53%.
Critics have taken to sharing their views, with one stating: “Black Adam embraces many of the worst elements and tropes of the superhero genre, resulting in a loud, discordant experience replete with fist-fights, pyrotechnics, and an overdose of CGI.”
Another added: “The charisma that usually flows so effortlessly out of Johnson has narrowed to a trickle. Even though he is omni-powerful, Black Adam, the character, is about as interesting as a glass of tepid water. It’ll quench your thirst, but isn’t all that fun.”
However some threw DC’s latest effort a lifeline, sharing that while the plot may not be the best it was still a fun watch.
One person said: “While the film does feel cobbled together out of spare parts of other superhero movies, and it’s almost instantly forgettable, Collett-Serra manages to hold it all together out of sheer force of will and an inherent sense of style.”
Anther said the film felt like the product of putting all other DC films in a blender, adding: “Sometimes you get a delicious character morsel like Wonder Woman or Man of Steel. Sometimes you nearly choke on a chunk of Suicide Squad. But it won me over.”
