Cleethorpes skate park closure sparks outrage
The closure of a skate park in Cleethorpes has been met with frustration, as avid skaters and users will no longer have a location in Cleethorpes to practice their passion.
The Trin skatepark, at the Trinity Activity Centre, announced the closure of the bowl due to safety issues.
“The skatepark is now officially closed until further notice. We have received information from our insurers that the current state of the skatepark is not safe to use and therefore no insurance is in place to cover public liability.
“The area will be fenced off with notice not to enter the site, we kindly ask that everybody respects the notice and does not enter,” they said on social media.
There has been some hitting back at the decision, as regular attendees Michael and Jonothan say the closure is just part of plans to eventually replace the site with a football pitch.
“For the BMX and skate and scootering community in this town this is actually a disaster, local groups worked so hard to design and get this facility and now you’re closing it. If it’s going to end up closing for good the trin centre and the council should absolutely have to replace this facility in another location as the skatepark was open to the general public before the centre was taken over.
“Absolutely unbelievable, the BMX and skate community in Grimsby and Cleethorpes is officially dying, the one outdoor skate park that is actually fun and safe to ride is gone, the council wants to get the kids of the streets and spend money for things for the youth then things like this happen and nothing gets done about it, trin has always been a public skate park and since it has been run by the trin club it has been the safest and had the least trouble in years but yet it is being closed now.” Elliott Pickett said on their social media page.
As part of the Cleethorpes Masterplan, designer Wayne Hemingway has pitched dozens of developments including an amphitheatre, event zones, café and bar areas, play zones, and a skate park in Cleethorpes.
The full masterplan has now been published on North East Lincolnshire Council’s website.
The Trin said they have contacted the group that was responsible for the planning of this facility, unfortunately the group no longer exist.
