Mother of Jeffrey Dahmer victim condemns Netflix series: “It didn’t happen like that”

The mother of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims is questioning the accuracy of the hit show.

Speaking to The Guardian, Shirley Hughes said that she hadn’t seen all of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. However, she concluded that the events shown “didn’t happen like that,” before questioning how such a show came to be made.

“I don’t see how they can do that,” the 85-year-old said. “I don’t see how they can use our names and put stuff out like that out there.”

Those behind the show, including creator Ryan Murphy and actor Evan Peters, have stated that the show strived to centre their production on the stories of the victims and their families. Instead, they have faced backlash and criticism for not asking for permission with the family members first.

Hughes is the most recent family member of a victim to share disapproval with the series.

Last month, Eric Perry, a cousin of victim Errol Lindsey, tweeted that the series is “retraumatizing” his family.

“I’m not telling anyone what to watch, I know true crime media is huge rn, but if you’re actually curious about the victims, my family (the Isbell’s) are pissed about this show,” he posted on Twitter. “It’s retraumatizing over and over again, and for what? How many movies/shows/documentaries do we need?”
