‘Kind-hearted’ woman raises incredible sum for local charity

A “kind-hearted” woman has raised an incredible sum of money for Scunthorpe charity Lindsey Lodge.

Helen Tawn, from Goole, embarked on a huge charity driven initiative in memory of her friend John Mitchell, who sadly passed away at Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare in 2020.

Helen decided to sign up for the Hull Half Marathon to raise funds to give back to the charity that looked after her friend, managing to raise a staggering £1,700 for their vital services.

Taking to the streets of Hull, Helen ran 13,1 miles in 2 hours and 51 minutes.

Following her success, Helen said:

“I booked my place at the Hull marathon back in 2019 but Covid hit, and it meant that everything was delayed. After I’d signed up for the race, my dear friend John Mitchell sadly passed away.

“John’s daughters Lucy and Ruth spoke so highly of Lindsey Lodge and the kindness the team showed him and his family, that I was inspired to run in memory of him and raise money for the Hospice.”

After two and a half years of tough training, Helen was eventually able to cross the finish line on Cottingham Road on Sunday 12 June, marking her first ever completed half marathon.

“During my final kilometre of the race I was joined by John’s daughter Ruth. Having her run by my side gave me the final push I needed to finish the race,” Helen added.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice Fundraiser Emma Hartley:

“What Helen has achieved is incredible, paying special tribute to her friend John while raising so much money for Lindsey Lodge, in her very first half marathon.

“Here at Lindsey Lodge we’re celebrating 30 years of care thanks to the support of people like Helen. Every penny she has raised will go directly to our care and enable us to continue supporting local patients and their families.”

Well done, Helen!
