Man jailed for life after killing Scunthorpe mother
The man who raped and killed a Scunthorpe mother in her own bed has been jailed for life.
38-year-old Andrew Grimes admitted murdering 39-year-old Sophie Cartledge in June last year.
ITV reported Grimes had been wandering around intoxicated on the evening of 17 June before being taken back to his then-partner Sophie’s home. Sadly, Ms Cartlidge was discovered by her daughter the next morning.
In a brave victim statement read out at Hull Crown Court earlier in the week, Sophie’s daughter told Grimes: “I hope you are haunted by it. We thought you loved my mum”, adding that she is “broken” and her mum was “her best friend.”
The ex-soldier was jailed at Hull Crown Court after Judge John Thackray QC condemned Grimes’ deplorable actions, adding that Grimes did in fact “intend to kill” the mother of two.
The 38-year-old showed no signs of emotion or regret whilst he received his sentence.
He will sever a minimum of 27 years before he can ever be considered for release. As Grimes spent 375 days in custody, he could be eligible for release in 26 years – it would be the Parole Board’s decision if he is granted release.
Additionally, Grimes will have to register as a sex offender following an eight-year prison sentence, to be severed alongside his 27-year sentence, after he admitted two offences of assault by penetration.
