Man “on a bit of a mad one” charged following Jet garage incident

A man intimidated a garage worker, using threatening tactics and stole £350, cigarettes and vodka from the Jet Garage on Cromwell Road in an apparent drunken rampage, a court has heard he was “on a bit of a mad one”.

Kiel Jagger, 36, was charged with affray and theft following the incident on April 1, earlier this year. He later appeared at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday, June 10, to face the charges regarding the incident.

Prosecuting, Stephen Robinson told the court that Jagger, of Chapelfield Road in Goxhill, had previously known the shop worker before the incident and never had any issues of this nature.

He continued saying  Jagger arrived intoxicated at the garage at 11.45pm, He asked the worker if he could use the toilet so he was allowed inside as it was 15 minutes until the closing time.

Mr Robinson said: “He became angry and demanded a cigarette and the shop worker gave him one hoping that it would make him go away. He was saying he wanted to smoke in the office.”

The defendant pushed past the shop worker and was then asked to leave the premises, before pushing “a lot of spirits” from a shelf onto the floor, causing them to smash.

The court heard that Jagger slipped in the puddle and caused an injury to his leg.

Following this, Jagger made his way back into the office and till area where he stole £170 in cash from the office, £150 of notes from the till and £20 to £30 in change. He also stole a bottle of vodka.

Jagger was being escorted by another customer away, then fell over on the garage forecourt near the petrol pumps where the bottle of vodka smashed.

He attempted to hide in a vehicle when police arrived but was found and arrested by officers before being taken to hospital to treat his leg injury.

Defending Jagger, Dale Brook told Grimsby Crown Court: “The defendant has turned his life around in recent years. He has shown genuine remorse for the events of that night. Since this incident and since confronting the very real possibility of a prison sentence, he has spent more time with his family and his two children. It’s been a big learning curve to him.”

Sentencing Jagger, Judge Mark Bury said: “You are 36 and you now have a stable relationship and two children who you dote on and you also have a decent business going now. You have a lot to lose. You have got a bad record and you have not done that much jail time in the past. You have been lucky in that respect. You really couldn’t complain if I sent you to prison because the affray was an ugly incident. It looked like you were bullying [the shop worker], trying to get your own way, and the fact that you were drunk at the time is no excuse.”

Jagger received 12 months imprisonment – nine months for affray and three months for theft – suspended for two years. He was also ordered to carry out a rehabilitation activity requirement for up to ten days and to pay £350 compensation for the money going missing from the garage, £150 compensation for the criminal damage and £250 compensation to the shop worker.

“Don’t blow it”, Judge Bury told Jagger.
