Scunthorpe MP votes in support of the prime minister in confidence vote

On Monday, Boris Johnson won a confidence vote after many Tory MPs stated they had lost confidence in their leader.

After a whole day of nail-biting anticipation, it was announced that he would remain in as prime minister, with 211 MPs voting in favour while 148 voted against.

One MP who voted in favour of the PM was Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft.

The MP clarified that she had voted for the PM after taking “as many views onboard as possible” from her constituents.

In a statement, she said: “I know that it is inevitable that not everyone will agree with me one hundred per cent of the time, but that is the nature of being an MP and I always work to put the interests of our area first and to listen. I am genuinely grateful to all those who have given their views.

“Having listened to many people’s experiences of lockdown, I know how people have been affected and understand their strength of feeling on this issue.

“The Prime Minister will now be investigated by the Privileges Committee, who will reach a considered view on the Prime Minister’s comments at the Despatch Box. It is important that they are allowed to do their job without interference. In the meantime, the Government now need to get on with the job that the people in the Scunthorpe constituency put them there to do.”

She added that Mr Johnson has a history of “supporting our area”, such as intervening “three times to personally support the steel industry and thousands of jobs locally.”

She went on to say: “We have had fantastic wins since 2019, including a new A&E at Scunthorpe General Hospital, £30.9 million for regeneration projects in our town centre and vital help for people struggling with the cost of living.

“I hope residents will agree that I should continue to support the Government and work on the issues that matter most to our community.”
