NHS leadership changes after review finds bullying across trusts

Leadership across NHS Trusts in England will be overhauled after a review found evidence of bullying and blame cultures,.

Following a series of damaging scandals at NHS trusts, the government said the report found “institutional inadequacy” in how managers are trained and valued.

Since the Covid pandemic, the NHS has been under an unprecedented amount of strain.

As final restrictions have been lifted and patients return to hospitals for treatment, many are left waiting for up to eights hours before they get seen by a doctor.

Bullying within NHS Trusts comes as no surprise, as many Trusts have faced scandal and outrage over the last few years.

One such trust, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole, saw patients waiting for hours on end while staff bullied each other about.

Some staff at the Diana Princess of Wales hospital in Grimsby have stated that their is a hierarchal system of bullying from senior members of staff.

The worst claims come from the A&E department, where there are rampant claims of misogyny and racism amongst other forms of bullying from senior doctors to the nursing staff.

A member of staff claimed that the department “isn’t safe” and that in the event of an emergency they would rather drive to Hull or Lincoln for treatment than go to the Grimsby hospital.

One member of staff has claimed that there is a “culture of bullying” within the NHS trust, and that any allegations made are “pushed under the rug” to “keep up the trust’s reputation”.

Sajid Javid said: “The findings in this report are stark, it shows examples of great leadership but also where we need to urgently improve.”

He fully supported the review’s recommendations, which the government said include:

  • action to improve equality, diversity and inclusion
  • clear routes to progression and promotion
  • a simplified appraisal system to focus on how people have behaved, not just what they have achieved
  • the development of consistent management standards through accredited training
  • encouraging the best leaders and managers to take on the most difficult roles, so they are seen as “the best jobs rather than the most feared jobs”
