Delight as swans and cygnets grace the Freshney River in record numbers

This week locals have been delighted to see swans and their cygents gracing the Freshney River in record numbers.

The swans have slowly become their own tourist attraction as many flock to see them glide along the water sharing videos and pictures on social media.

A pair at Riverhead has had 10 cygnets and another pair near The Duke of York Gardens has an eleven-strong flock.

Recent river cleaning works by the council and multiple volunteer litter picks have greatly improved the quality of the river, helping to breed new life.

More than a tonne and a half of metal was hauled out of the River Freshney in a dredging operation earlier in the year.

Ebsford Environmental undertook the dredging of the river between West Haven Maltings opposite Frederick Ward Way and the ABP pumping station.

A total of 2,231 tonnes of silt were removed or redistributed to deeper stretches of the river. There were 122 lorry loads removed after work started in the middle January.

The Canoe River Cleaner James and many local organisations such as RiverCare have held multiple river clean ups this year alone.

Their fantastic work has helped the local environment flourish and has drwan public attention to how important it is to keep our area clean and safe for years to come.

Have you got any snaps of the swans? Share them in the comments!
