Two arson attacks as local park sees increase in deliberate fires
A local park has been subject to two consecutive arson attacks this week as the instances of arson in the park grow.
Ainslie Rec in Grimsby was targeted by arsonists on Monday night when an old willow tree and some clothing were set alight.
Thankfully the fires didn’t spread but the old willow tree has been left badly damaged.
Humberside Fire and Rescue were called to the scene on Monday night where they put out the fires but in an attempt to stop the flames the tree had to be axed.
A local resident shared the attacks on Facebook, stating: “Two arson attacks on local parks last night (as far as I know, there may have been more) on Ainslie and Barrets.
“This is the aftermath of an attack on a beautiful old willow tree on Ainslie Rec last night, a group of ferals (suspect it was the two boys and a girl who were hanging around the tree about 10/15 minutes before the fire engine turned up) set a fire inside the trunk, which is now charred and blackened and bears several axe marks, doubtless the only way the firemen could stop the whole tree igniting from the inside.
According to reports, an arson attempt was also made to set fire to a line of trees on Barrets in the latest of several fires on Ainslie Rec.
Residents added that over the last few weeks, three black bins have been burnt out, an attempt has been made to set fire to a large fallen tree and even some of the fencing has been burnt.
People’s Park in Grimsby has also seen multiple arson attacks in recent months.
Witnesses said that fire and rescue teams were at the sight for over an hour before the fire was put out.
