Discarded oil container leads to contaminated river and dead swans
Earlier this week, two swans were found covered in oil on a busy high-speed road in Grimsby after a suspected oil spill.
One of the swans, now named Diesel, was covered in oil and needed emergency treatment after ingesting some of the dangerous chemicals.
After raising a whopping £600 for the vet bill, Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue shared that he is showing extremely positive progress and will hopefully be back to full health soon.
They said: “A huge thank you to all who have supported the campaign for Diesel the mute swan so far – Progress is certainly being shown!
“Diesel was found yesterday (05.05.2022) on a busy road just outside Grimsby covered in fuel, we’ve still got a long way to go and he’s still on a fluid infusion at the moment but all progress so far has been extremely positive.”
When conducting a four-hour search for a second swan covered in oil who could be Diesel’s partner volunteers located nearly two miles of contaminated water near Stallinborough.
After contacting the council Environmental officers carried out an investigation of the river, concluding that the contamination was the result of a discarded oil container found in Middle Drain.
The council also added that two swans had sadly been found dead following the spill.
A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council said: “We were contacted by Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue yesterday after two swans were found dead and another was found covered in what looks like diesel or oil in Stallingborough.
“The liquid appears to have leaked from a discarded 10-litre container found in Middle Drain, near North Moss Lane culvert. This incident serves as a reminder of the harm done by fly-tipping and littering.
“If anyone sees pollution of any kind in a watercourse, please report it to the Environment Agency hotline on 0800 807060.”
