Covid infections record drop of nearly one million

According to the latest estimates from the Office for National Statistics, there has been a record drop in Covid infections.

The figures say around 2.87 million people would have tested positive in the week to 23rd April- reportedly 900,000 less than the week before.

The levels are declining in England, Scotland and Wales- not including Northern Ireland.

There have been decreases in all age groups in the UK, but the ONS said infections remained high.

The BBC reported “We are yet to see if this is part of a larger trend” said Kara Steel, senior statistician for the Covid-19 infection survey.

From the latest estimates, it states one in 23 would test positive for the virus, which is down from one in 17 the week before.

It has amounted to the largest fall in total infections since ONS started the survey in July 2020.

The figures were based on tests on people in random households across the UK- the ONS stated one in 25 people in England has Covid.

Official UK data shows the number of people admitted to hospital with the virus continues to fall.

The figures for mid-April showed 1,150 people died during the previous week with the virus.

Infections are said to have fell in all regions, however the highest is North East, with a figure of 6.1% testing positive.

The infections for over 70s and those aged two to 10 are falling as well, with the largest amount being those younger.

Hospital admissions are lowered from a figure of 2,400 admitted by the end of March, now a figure of 1,455 admissions each day.
