West should supply Ukraine warplanes says, Truss
The West should provide warplanes to Ukraine in the conflict against Russia for usage, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will say as she calls for increased defence spending.
In a speech in London, Ms. Truss will state that the West “must be prepared for the long haul and double down on our support” for Ukraine.
Ukraine has repeatedly asked for support in terms of heavy armaments from Western allies.
Nato has reportedly only provided lighter weaponry through fears of an escalation of the conflict.
From the BBC, it is reported that Ms. Truss will tell an audience at Mansion House that “the fate of Ukraine remains in the balance.”
“If Putin succeeds there will be untold further misery across the globe. We would never feel safe again, she will say on Wednesday evening.
“Heavy weapons, tanks, aeroplanes- digging deep into our inventories, ramping up production. We need to do all of this.”
Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, David Lammy said about the speech “appears to be an admission of failure after more than a decade of decline.”
After being asked multiple times if he backed the calls for sending planes, deputy PM Dominic Raab would not answer, however, he told BBC Radio 4 “We need to listen very carefully to what the Ukrainians need.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday he would be happy for Ukrainian forces to use the British-supplied weapons against Russia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said Nato had effectively already entered the war with Russia “through proxies”- suggesting the same will be thought of others.
