Co-op supermarket scraps yoghurt use by dates to cut food waste
The Co-op supermarket has announced that it will no longer place use-by dates on its own brand yoghurt in a bit to cut down on food waste.
The label will be replaced with best before dates instead as guidance, with the supermarket stating that 6 million people in the UK eat yoghurt daily.
Recycling charity Wrap carried out research which shows half of yoghurts are binned unopened as they were not eaten before the use-by date.
They also found that 70% of food waste happens in homes.
Use-by labels are the dates until which perishable food can be cooked and consumed safely.
Best before guidance is for when the product should be consumed to get the best quality, taste and texture.
The Food Standards Agency says it is up to manufacturers to decide whether to apply a use-by or best before date on their products.
This depends on factors such as how the food is made and how risky it is, it said.
In January, Morrisons got rid of use by dates on its own-brand milk, aiming to prevent millions of pints being poured down the sink
What do you think? Should supermarkets get ride of useby dates?
