Ukrainian flag disappears over town hall
North East Lincolnshire Council confirmed back in March plans to install a Ukrainian flag at Grimsby Town Hall.
The council received backlash for not installing a flag when many others had quickly done so.
This comes as the council faced growing criticism for its response to the crisis.
The flag has now seemingly disappeared over the town hall leaving locals to question what has become of it.
Back in March, the authority confirmed that it had been attempting to obtain a flag in line with the tributes paid by other councils across the nation.
Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes, admitted that the Government was guilty of “delays and slip ups” in the handling of visas for those fleeing Ukraine.
Speaking at a full meeting of the council at the time, Mayor David Hasthorpe said:
“The fact that a Ukraine flag isn’t flying over the town hall should not be taken as a sign of disregard to the plight of victims.
“A flag has been on order for several weeks, but there is a shortage of those colours.”
The council also said it is on hand to do “all it can” to support those affected by the crisis.
It says it is working to co-ordinate deliveries of supplies to Ukraine and working alongside local landlords to make properties available for refugees.
Information on how to make donations or sponsor a refugee can be found on the North East Lincolnshire Council website.
