Scunthorpe United’s relegation ends 72-year EFL stay

Scunthorpe United’s 72-year stay in the English Football League came to an end after the Iron lost 3-0 to Leyton Orient yesterday.

The club have not had much to celebrate this season, collecting just 4 wins all campaign, with internal leadership being especially scrutinised.

Last month, Peter Swann announced that he would be stepping down as the club’s chairman with immediate effect, leaving his club in complete misery.

Although Swann had resigned as the club’s chairman, he still retains ownership of the Iron, a notion that displeases most fans.

For example, videos began to emerge after Scunthorpe were thrashed 4-0 by Mansfield of fans chanting “we want swanny out”

Additionally, a collection of fans invaded the pitch to make their feelings more obvious.

Yesterday’s defeat appeared to be the final nail in the coffin as Leyton Orient was completely dominant from the get-go.

The Iron fell behind after just 15 minutes, Paul Smyth fired home from an acute angle to beat Watson in goal.

The O’s continued to punish Scunthorpe’s defence in a three on three attack. Drianan and Archibald linked up, before the latter threaded the ball into the net.

Moments later, Orient were leading 3-0 thanks to a headed effort from Ruel Sotiriou.

The Iron had managed to keep the scoreline 3-0 during the second half, but defeat yesterday means National League Football next season.

Meanwhile, Grimsby Town put on a marvellous display in front of a packed Blundell Park, beating top spot Stockport County 2-1.

The Mariners had fallen behind early on, but goals from Holohan and McAtee proved too much for the Hatters.

The Black and White Army have managed to take 6 crucial points in past weeks, 3 away to Chesterfield and 3 in yesterdays comeback victory.

However, if Town are to secure National League promotion this season, they must continue to impress.

Grimsby’s away form will be a concern for fans, especially given the Mariners have three fixtures to play away from home before the season concludes.

If Town fails to earn promotion back into League Two for the new campaign, the Iron will meet Grimsby next year, a fixture that football fans will not want to miss.

The Mariners travel to King’s Lynn Town on Monday (18 April)
