Easter warning of airport staff shortages

Passengers are being advised of longer waiting times at airports over Easter, involving longer queues and check-ins.

This is down to an apparent shortage of staff.

The Airport Operators Association said members had been attempting to hire following job losses.

They warned that recruitment problems have arisen, including Covid absences for current staff.

The AOA represents most UK airports.

Chief Executive of AOA, Karen Dee, said a passenger “May not have the experience they are used to”.

According to reports, airports were working to recruit more staff in the run-up to Easter.

Allegedly “Working with the UK Government to resolve any delays in the necessary checks before staff can start work”.

The AOA has asked travelers to arrive on early flights due to longer check-ins, including making sure they have the correct documentation.

Holiday bookings have jumped after Covid regulations have eased.

Kevin O’Reilly said, “It’s always been a rough market to recruit for, but it’s become harder this year”.

” A huge number of people left the aviation industry due to the pandemic and whilst many have come back, many have found alternative positions in other sectors

” Now there’s a bounce back from having no people traveling, to suddenly everyone wanting travel”.

Heathrow reportedly said earlier this month that peak demand could reach 85% of pre-pandemic levels.

Heathrow also suggested it was “Particularly concerned” about the Border Force’s ability to scale up.
