Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe holds first news conference since release

Today, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe held her first news conference since her return to the UK on Thursday after six years in prison.

In 2016 Nazanin traveled to Tehran to visit her parents and celebrate the Iranian new year.

However, as she reached the airport to return home she was arrested by members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

Nazanin was accused of plotting to topple the government in Tehran and leading a “foreign-linked hostile network” – accusations she has always denied.

Now, after years of appeals, trials, and jail sentences, Nazanin has been reunited with her family back in the UK.

In her news conference, her husband Richard opened by stating he was “immensely proud and pleased” to have his wife back home.

He then thanked the government and the foreign office for getting Nazadin back home. He also thanked the public and the press for keeping the story alive which kept up the momentum to bring his wife home.

Speaking for the first time, Nazanin thanked everyone who helped her to get home, first thanking her family back in the UK.

She went on to thank her legal and medical team in Iran, other prisoners, and their loved ones who still continue to fight, and last but not least her husband and daughter who fought so hard and waited patiently for her.

However, Nazanin disagreed with her husband who thanked the foreign secretary, asking “How many foreign secretaries does it take for someone to come out? Five. It should have been one.

“What’s happened now should have happened six years ago.”

She ended her speech by thanking the media and the public for following her story and keeping it in the public eye.
