Millions to get fourth Covid jab before Christmas
Millions of people across Britain are set to receive the fourth dose of their Covid-19 vaccine before Christmas, it has been confirmed.
The government announced plans to launch another roll-out in February.
Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid said: “Thanks to our COVID-19 vaccination rollout, we are already the freest country in Europe.
“It has saved countless lives, reduced pressure on the NHS and is allowing us to learn to live with the virus.
“We know immunity to COVID-19 begins to wane over time.
“That’s why we’re offering a spring booster to those people at higher risk of serious COVID-19 to make sure they maintain a high level of protection.
“It’s important that everyone gets their top-up jabs as soon as they’re eligible.”
Until now, only those with severely weakened immune systems had been eligible for a fourth dose.
Adults will be offered the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, while children aged 12-18 will receive the Pfizer vaccine.
According to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, vaccinating these groups is a “precautionary” measure.
An NHS England spokesman added: “The NHS will be vaccinating eligible people with a spring dose six months after their first booster, starting later this month for the small number of people eligible before April.”
But the decision to administer another booster vaccine has been met with some controversy.
