Russia not observing ceasefire as attacks continue
Russia are failing to observe a temporary ceasefire as attacks continue along evacuation routes, according to the latest reports from Ukrainian authorities.
In a statement the Russian Defence Ministry confirmed it was declaring a ceasefire and opening “humanitarian corridors” to allow civilians to leave the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha.
But according to Serhiy Orlov, Deputy Mayor of Mariupol, troops are failing to observe this.
Speaking to the BBC, he said “the Russians are continuing to bomb us and use artillery” despite the ceasefire.
The city council added that fighting was also continuing in the Zaporizhzhia region.
A number of civilian evacuation drives have been cancelled as a result. Citizens have been urged to remain at home.
More than 1.2 million Ukrainian refugees have now crossed the country’s borders after the Russian invasion began 10 days ago.
Poland has accepted nearly 800,000 Ukrainian refugees, while at least 140,000 people have crossed into Hungary, 200,000 into Romania, and 20,000 into Bulgaria.
