Monumental fundraiser begins at Cleethorpes RNLI station

A monumental fundraiser for RNLI has begun at the Cleethorpes RNLI station as it heads out across the country.

Yorkshire based retiree, David Holdsworth, plans to complete a tour of 180 of the RNLIs lifeboat stations to raise money in memory of his mum, Mick.

David, 70 and his wife Hazel, from Wakefield, recently purchased a Volkswagen Campervan T6 and have planned an ambitious 66 day schedule between 1st March and 5th May to visit 180 RNLI lifeboat stations.

The adventure began today (Tuesday 1 March) from Cleethorpes Lifeboat Station and David will be averaging around 80 – 100 miles in Betty Bus, the Campervan!

Named after Hazel’s mum, Betty Bus will be transporting David 4,625 miles around England, Wales and Scotland ending at Humber Lifeboat station on Thursday 5 May.

RNLI Senior Community Manager Sarah Child says: “We are truly grateful to David for his epic challenge raising vital funds for the RNLI in memory of his mum. The RNLI is powered by the public’s generosity and we are so grateful for his support, which will help us to continue to save every one.”

David has set up a Go Fund Me page in a bid to raise £2,000 for the organisation, with £380 being raised so far.

Sharing his plane David wrote: “In memory of my Mum, I am visiting all 180 Lifeboat Stations around England, Scotland and Wales in March and April this year. All donations will help the Royal National Lifeboat Institution save even more lives at sea.

“Since being a young boy it has been no secret that this was my Mum’s favourite charity which is the inspiration behind this journey. So to honour my mum and all the lives lost at sea it would be much appreciated if you could show your support.

“Please support my adventure by making a donation however small (or large). Sadly this charity doesn’t receive any Government funding. By donating your will be showing your support to the volunteer crews who provide 24-hour search and rescue, risking their lives to save others.

“Their lifeguards keep watch over you and your loved ones on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands.”
